"I'm proud of my Grimsby roots, and I will never stop fighting for local people, culture and jobs"
I am a proud born and bred Grimbarian, I went to school at Healing school and later Franklin College and I have seen first hand the kindness and compassion of our community when I was supported by Doorstep when I was made homeless at 17.
I was elected as the MP for Greater Grimsby in 2015 and I was proud to retain my seat in the 2017 election, as it means I can continue to serve the great people of the constituency and do my absolute best to serve their needs and represent them in Parliament.
Prior to my election as an MP, I worked for 10 years at the Labour Party’s head office, becoming head of the Compliance Unit. In 2009, I stood in the European Parliament elections for the Yorkshire and Humber region, placing fifth Labour’s regional list. From 2010 to my election as an MP in 2015, I worked as a regional organiser for public sector trade union UNISON, and working here only further encouraged my drive for workers’ rights, something that I have gone on to strive for in Parliament.
Shortly after my election in 2015, I met with then Prime Minister David Cameron, and successfully negotiated £1.3 million for our local seafood firm Young’s Seafood, in order to preserve jobs in my constituency.
I voted to trigger Article 50 in the House of Commons and I am determined to get the best Brexit deal possible for our area in terms of employment, workers rights and immigration.
This year, I suggested that acts such as wolf-whistling and cat-calling ought to be classified as hate crimes, mainly to improve problems in the Grimsby constituency relating to women and relationships.
In July 2017, I was appointed to the front bench to serve as Shadow Housing Minister, and since then I have worked tirelessly in order to get a better deal for private renters, and tackle a shocking increase in homelessness under this Tory government.
