Shadow Housing Minister
In addition to fighting for Great Grimsby in Parliament, I also act as a Shadow Housing Minister for Labour, with a particular focus on homelessness and the private rented sector.
The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats sat back while a homelessness crisis developed as a result of their cuts; rough sleeping in England has nearly trebled since 2010 and the number of children growing up in temporary accommodation has gone up 70%.
Meanwhile, more and more households are struggling to get on the housing ladder, with 70% more families with children relying on rented accommodation with ever increasing rents rather than putting down roots in a home of their own.
All this creates insecurity for children and financial hardship for families, and it cannot go on.
We desperately need new homes for those who want to get on the housing ladder, better renting rights for our ever increasing army of renters and urgent action to get people off the streets and into safe accommodation.
Labour set out a positive and forward thinking vision for housing in our Housing Manifesto last year, and as a Shadow Housing Minister I will continue the fight to give those who are struggling in the housing crisis a new deal on housing.
