In a recent article for Labour List, I revealed how over half of homeless families are currently in employment, but struggling to find secure housing due to the failings of this Conservative government.
A recent study by Shelter discovered that there are upwards of 33,000 families living in temporary accommodation, despite holding down a job; meaning this figure has increased 73% since 2013. The difference? A long standing Conservative government. In our modern society, how is the government allowing for such injustices to be carried out not only to the individual, but to families with children too?
The evidence on the effect of children living in such conditions is shocking. The government has shelled out £3.5 billion in the last five years, all to keep children in dirty, damp and miserable conditions littered with vermin. This obviously has an adverse affect on the well-being of children exposed to such conditions, and can lead to serious mental health problems.
The Conservative government has consistently claimed over the last eight years that employment is the solution to homelessness, but thanks to this study from Shelter, it has now become increasingly clear that this policy is flawed, and only Labour can rectify this problem with a new deal on housing that works for all.
